Avs forward Turgeon retiring
Former Avalanche forward Pierre Turgeon, who scored 515 goals in 19 NHL seasons, will announce his retirement today.
The Avalanche confirmed Tuesday that Turgeon, 38, has informed the team of his plans. He played two seasons with Colorado and became an unrestricted free agent July 1 when his contract expired.
Turgeon will make the announcement at agent Bob Sauve's office in Laval, Quebec, near Montreal. Turgeon is from Rouyn, Quebec; he played parts of three seasons with the Canadiens, captaining the club in 1995-96.
Turgeon had 20 goals and 33 assists in 79 games in his two seasons with the Avalanche. Injuries limited him to 17 games last season, when he collected four goals and three assists. He missed the first 27 games to recover from shoulder surgery and the final 26 games because of a calf injury.
Turgeon, drafted first overall by the Buffalo Sabres in 1987, played 1,294 games and ranks 30th on the NHL's all-time list for goals and 27th for assists (812) and points (1,327).
Turgeon also played for the New York Islanders, St. Louis Blues and Dallas Stars. He won the Lady Byng Trophy while with the Islanders in 1992-93 when he posted career highs for goals (5, assists (74) and points (132).
