Norilsk nickel announces implementation of environmental projectsin 2011 - Truck Diagnostic Tool
OJSC MMC Norilsk Nickel offers its congratulations upon theEcologist's Day to all those working for the sake of theenvironmental protection and wishes further success in theirimportant activities. On this day, the company summarizes theresults of the environmental activities performance in 2011. Companies of Norilsk Nickel Group carry works aimed to minimize theproduction impact on the environment. In 2011, the company continued implementing a range of actions inorder to reduce pollutants emissions into the atmosphere anddischarges with sewage waters, to design and construct treatmentfacilities, to decrease waste generating and burying.
The Polar Division's [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] pollutants emissions in 2011 were in line withthe permit. In comparison with 2010, the emissions of solidparticles were reduced by 448.12 tonnes or 4.1% due to actionsinvolving modernization, maintenance repairs and overhauls ofexisting dust and gas purifying equipment. Furthermore, the mostsignificant decrease in emissions was achieved as to the followingcomponents: metal containing dust by 8.4%, nickel oxide by 8.6%,copper oxide by 14.9% and lead by 13.2%. In 2011, the reconstruction of slag cleaning furnace No 4 atNadezhda Metallurgical Plant was completed. As part of thereconstruction, dust and gas cleaning equipment was replaced withmore effective one.
Thus, on the cement production clinker line, anair quenching cooler's electrical filter was replaced with amodern efficient pulse jet bag filter that allowed reducing thecement dust emissions by 900 tonnes per annum. The Polar Division implemented an air [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] quality monitoring system atroute and under-plume sites in Norilsk, in order to regulatepollutants emissions in the period of unfavorable weatherconditions, such as: temperature inversion, zero wind, etc. During2011, 215 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] relevant actions responding to unfavorable weatherconditions were implemented by the Polar Division in itsmetallurgical plants. Kola [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] MMC achieved emissions reduction for sulphur dioxide by 5.37%and for solid particles by 0.14%, due to decreasing sulphur dioxideemissions on the site of Monchegorsk and commissioning thepalletizing sector's first line on the site of Zapolyarny in Q42011.
MMC Norilsk Nickel has developed and implemented the waterconservation and protection action plan. As compared to 2010, thetotal volume of water consumed by the Group in 2011 was reduced by21.7 million cubic [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] meters or 5%. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Water withdrawal from surfacewater reservoirs was [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] reduced by 26.2 million cubic meters or 10.4%and from underground water reservoirs by 0.96 million cubic metersor [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] 3.2%. In general, the Group decreased the volume of water used by 81million cubic meters or 5.7% in comparison with 2010. In 2011, thecompany continued optimizing the water consumption and decreasingeffluents discharge into surface water bodies.
Compared to 2010, the companies of the Group reduced the totalamount of sewage water discharged in 2011 by 11.4% (i.e. 18.1million cubic meters; the discharge of effluents facility treatedto standard quality was increased by 242,000 cubic meters or 87.5%. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] In 2011, waste generation by the companies of the Group was reducedin total by 5,168,800 tonnes or 11.2% in comparison with 2010. Over90% of production wastes generated in the course of thecompany's operations are classified as hazard class V wastes(virtually environmentally non hazardous). Thewaste stored at the Polar Division's own facilities amounted to19,523,040 tonnes, which is 1.7% less than in 2010. In 2011, new facilities were built to expand Lebyazhye tailing dumpand to ensure environmentally safe tails storage. The firststart-up facility aimed to use final Talnakh Concentrator'stailings at Komsomolsky Mine was fully ramped up. That will allowusing about 250,000 cubic meters of tails per annum or 220,000tonnes per annum [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] for backfilling of the mined out area. The total environmental expenses of the Company in 2011 exceededRUB 17 billion. For the period of 2004-2011, MMC Norilsk Nickelallocated over RUB 90 billion for environmental issues settlement,including operating costs for environmental protection equipmentretrofitting, upgrading and maintenance, as well as capitalexpenditures on environmental protection.
