Modern coolers and fridges may not be actively drilling a hole in the ozone layer but older models are still emitting greenhouse gases that are warming the planet.
Energy Efficiency of European Refrigerators
In the last twenty years, tremendous progress has been made to produce energy efficient refrigerator models that consume less than half a kilowatt-hour per day. Europe managed to nip the problem in the bud by making it mandatory for technology and appliance companies to make energy efficient European refrigerators that meet the A-class energy [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] efficiency rating. By April 2012, only these [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] varieties will be available for sale on the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] European market.
Generally, most refrigerators are now classified as A, which means an energy [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] consumption of about 179 kWh/year.? These are considered to be the most energy efficient machines on the market. B and C [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] rated models are equally good but they are cheaper and much more affordable. They have energy consumption levels of 402 kWh/year. The European market does not allow the sale of models ranging from D to G. ?
Certification of European Refrigerators
In the US, the Energy Star commission deals with home appliances and accredits them for home use [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] after [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] approving usability, performance, ergonomics and power efficiency. However, in Europe, energy efficiency may be measured by the TCO organization or by the European Commission for Energy. Directive number 92/75 initially stated that all models of refrigerators had to carry labels or stickers about the energy efficiency of the model.
This sticker and labeling proved to be so effective in cutting [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] down energy consumption that two more optional classes of energy saving refrigerators and freezers labeled as A+ and A++ were set up. A survey carried out in 2010 also showed that consumers did notice the colorful labels and a majority of people in Norway, Denmark, Poland and the UK recognized and referred to the labels before purchase. Consumers were so happy with the lower energy bills that they were more than happy [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] to pay a little more for the models. ?
Energy Savings on Refrigerators ?
Popular European models like Bausch, Electrolux, Maytag, Prestige, and Gorenje now have a range of wonderfully colored models that are [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] listed for sale at affordable rates [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] but with the best energy savings on all of them. Out of the many models that consumers can choose from, the Electrolux two-door refrigerator-freezer and Whirlpool's one-door cabinet refrigerator received Europe's Energy Plus award. This award was [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] 175 kWh of energy per year.
However, the actual style of the refrigerator will also influence the power usage. European models have a standard 60cm [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] depth and a narrow width but relatively high height that ranges up to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] 2.5 meters. Larger models with smaller doors do require more power but manufacturers have come up with cooling tricks that will still make these models the very best in the entire world.
